I’m familiar with the concept of dress it up so people think “hey, this looks awesome and shiny!” Take Toyota and Lexus for those little chrome pieces of plastic in cool parallelogram shapes in the rear fender. The little circular exhaust pipe is visible right behind it...but whatever. Exterior looks great to consumers and it’s purely cosmetic so that’s all that matters.

This, however, was new to me.

Kinja'd!!!

An X1 was in front of me while I was in traffic yesterday. I noticed something shiny and weird in the pipe when I realized that the one on the right was actually just a piece of pipe leading to the outside of the muffler. Seriously. They (BMW, not the owner) had a “dual” exhaust.

So, yeah. This is apparently a thing.

Update : Thank you ESSSIX GmbH - Accountant/Wagon Thumper for pointing out the butterfly valve. In traffic, this was actually closed hence my thought it was fake. Pretty cool, actually.

A lot of the Mercedes cars have a pipe just behind the fake tip.

That’s what you get for buying the cheapest model in a luxury car lineup. With the X1, you’re paying for the badge.

Many BMWs actually have a butterfly valve on the one tip. Never noticed a fake tip yet, but I dont usually check’em out.

Keep in mind that the first-generation X1 was based on the 3-series Touring xDrive. So you’re paying for a slightly uglier, slightly higher 3-Series wagon.

Yes, I believe that’s the case with the X1. It’s closed at low RPM. I’ve noticed it in traffic, too.

This is the second worst thing I've ever heard about the X1, right after the fact that the X1 exists.

Also one of the SUVs (can’t remember which one) has a fake head light and is only there for the dual halo look.

lol it’s been a thing since the nineties... most cars you see with two exhaust tips are the exact same way. I can’t speak to other marques but BMW places a valve in the exhaust that opens/closes for a more aggressive sound when you’re driving hard, and to increase back pressure to help the cat warm up when it’s closed.

It’s not fake - it’s a real exhaust tip. For almost two decades BMW’s have used butterfly valves on their single-muffler exhaust systems to 1) decrease exhaust noise at idle and highway speeds while providing a small bump in torque (valve closed) and 2) provide a hint of exhaust note increase as you lay on the gas, as the right exhaust tip bypasses much of the internal exhaust gas routing in the muffler for a faster exit and more exhaust noise. The valve is only open on acceleration, which is why they usually look cleaner/less used than the other tip. Unless you own an older BMW, in which case the valve is pretty much always seized closed. I took my valve off of the E46 and it sounds throaty and burbly at idle, but there is excess noise at highway speed.

Kinja'd!!!1

Also note a lot of older BMWs used to have true dual exhaust system that exited through one muffler, hence the two tips on the E36, E46, E39, etc.

It seems as if the new turbo-4 models have a single exhaust but still keep the two-tip exit on the X28 models, with a single tip on the bottom-rung X20 models.

Not fake, just very oddly routed. And as someone said, could be butterflied to reduce noise when cruising.

Turns out it was a butterfly valve that shuts in traffic at low rpms. I would not have guessed this would be on the X1. Hell, didn’t even know it was a thing!

Kinja'd!!! functionoverfashion > cazzyodo
04/27/2016 at 10:54

Kinja'd!!!0

As you are now aware, that’s a valve, it’s been around at least since the E46 (‘99-06) generation. On my ‘03 it’s a common thing to bypass the valve so it’s always open, and it gives you a slightly deeper exhaust note especially at low RPM where the valve might normally be closed. So anyway....

Oh so you’re only on the heavy stuff now. Unless you rationed your core classes. I miss school... you’ll miss it too. Also for the CPA if you do take it follow this order: BEC, FAR, REG, AUD. It’ll save study time since the one before will cover some of the topics of the one following.

Lol I remember those days, I almost didnt make it my self. Also you will make a fool of your self, but know one will expect you to know it all. The best thing I can tell you is focus on understanding the why, and not just how its spelled. I hated going to school for accounting, I felt they didnt give you enough of the big picture, but now, on the other side, I like what I do, and I can see the big picture.

Exactly... hence I’m taking very good care of my ‘03 325xi wagon. I think you can get manual 3-series wagons up through 2012 (?) so I’ve got a little while still. My wife so much wants a new XC90 but I’m pushing the V90... we’ll see. Her ‘07 X3 has 170k and drives pretty much like new. So nothing is changing for a while, truth be told.

My wife and I have a ‘13 X1. Wish we could have done a 328 touring but the X1 was so much less expensive the 328 wasn’t an option. We were bummed they didn’t come manual (She had an ‘11 328 manual at the time) but the ZF 8 speed is a great trans. We’re are considering doing the Dinan tune to bring us up to 300+HP. If you get a chance to drive one, take it. Yeah they’re a little high up but they still feel a lot like the E91 they’re based on.

I’ve had a love affair with wagons my whole life. Volvo 240, 940, V90, V70XC. The X1 is by far my favorite.

Okay so there’s a butterfly valve. But why? Did they really add all this complexity to what could just be a metal tube, so the exhaust note can change a little at certain revs?

It may not be fake. But it’s a fine example of German over-engineering.

My 1999 e36 328is has one of these valves too. It changes the length of the flow path through the muffler based on engine vacuum. Look up ‘golf tee mod’ for BMWs. Makes the car quiet and refined at idle and low load situations, but opens up the valve to give some glorious extra noise at high load levels.
